Ongoing roadwork and a lack of painted stop signs led to numerous accidents in Goodwood in the last month.
A Goodwood resident Deon Smit raised his concerns about stop signs that do not get repainted on newly-tarred roads, leading to accidents.
According to Smit on the corner of Versveld and Paarl Street in Goodwood, two accidents have occurred in the three weeks since Versveld Road has been retarred. The first accident happened on 29 April and the second on 2 May.
And due to the same reason, another accident occurred on the corner of Merriman and Riebeeck Street, Goodwood.
Ward councillor Cecile Janse van Rensburg says road works are currently underway in the greater Goodwood. The road markings should ideally be painted within a week of the asphalt having set.
According to Janse van Rensburg she is aware that accidents involving vehicles have been reported, but the cause of the accidents is unknown to her.
Accidents reported
“These accidents would have been reported and as such crash reports should be available indicating the possible cause of any given accident,” the ward councillor says.
Janse van Rensburg says that in the absence of road markings due to road works motorists should heed the stop sign on the pavement.
“When there are roadworks and/or no road markings, motorists should be extra vigilant, especially when approaching intersections,” she says.
Furthermore, Smit adds that for a few months now the corners of Jameson and Wiener street, as well as the corner of Beaufort and Versveld there is damage to the road that is only being filled with grey stones and it does not get tarred.
At this point, the road is filled with stones.
But Janse Van Rensburg says the work at the corner of Wiener Street and Jameson Street has been completed.
