Breyton Langley’s matric ball was on Saturday 4 May and the next day he was shot in front of their flat in Ravensmead.
He was hospitalised after surviving miraculously and was recently discharged.
His mother, Bridgette Langley, told TygerBurger that he was discharged with staples still in his head.
“He was discharged with staples in his head and a drip still attached to his arm. He is still not well, and the wound is now turning septic. They gave me the tools to remove the staples. How can I do it not being a trained nurse? I am disappointed in how my child was treated,” says Bridgette.
According to her she took him to a private hospital to remove the drip. “He is till very confused and doesn’t want anyone touching is wounds. I am at my wits end and don’t know what to do anymore,” says Bridgette.
Response
Laticia Pienaar, spokesperson for Tygerberg Hospital, says Langley was treated for a significant head injury and received specialised care from the hospital’s neurosurgical team and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) staff.
“The neurosurgical team was satisfied to discharge him and prescribed him appropriate medication to manage his pain. The neurosurgical team advised that Langley’s dressing and wound clips must be removed prior to discharge. However, despite several attempts by the hospital staff to treat his surgical wound, Langley refused treatment and to have the dressing and clips removed. A neurosurgical follow-up was not required for him.
“On discharge he was advised to visit his local clinic for further wound care support and for removal of the wound clips as he refused to have this removed in hospital. Our local clinic healthcare teams are professional and trained to remove stitches and wound clips at the clinic,” says Pienaar.
No arrests have been made after the shooting.
