Most shops at Haasendal Gables in Kuils River are open and trading as normal following a fire at Haasendal SPAR over the weekend. However, centre management said SPAR will remain temporarily closed at this stage.

The incident occurred on Saturday night (10 January), when a fire broke out inside the SPAR coffee shop. Shoppers arriving at the centre on Sunday morning (11 January) initially encountered temporary store closures while emergency services attended to the scene. According to centre management, the damage appears to be contained within the SPAR premises.

Tenants trading again

In a statement issued on social media, Haasendal Gables thanked shoppers for their patience and support and confirmed that the majority of tenants have since reopened.

The following stores are currently trading:

  • TOPS at SPAR
  • Urban Nuts
  • Famous Kalahari Biltong
  • PostNet
  • About Cats & Dogs
  • Master Tailors

“Thank you for standing with our centre, our tenants and our community during this time. Your continued support means everything to us,” the statement read.

Fire extinguished early Sunday morning

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said the incident was reported at around 03:25 on Sunday as a building alight in Saxdowne Road, Annandale.

Fire crews from Kuils River, Kraaifontein, Milnerton and Brackenfell responded to the scene. By 05:10, firefighters had extinguished the blaze, which damaged a substantial area of the store, including the Bean Tree coffee shop and the fruit and vegetable section.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still unknown.

Emergency services instructed affected tenants not to resume trading until an official all-clear was issued by the fire department.
