More volunteers show up for Milnerton beach clean-up following Facebook poll results

More volunteers attended last week’s beach clean-up at Lagoon Beach.

The shores at Lagoon Beach in Milnerton witnessed a heartening surge in participation last week as a growing number of volunteers turned out for the latest beach clean-up.

TygerBurger reported last week (“Poll looks at why few help”, 14 February) about the lack of local involvement in the Milnerton area.

Zoë Prinsloo from Save a Fishie says she looked at the poll results and listened to what the community had to say.

“Saturday mornings are difficult for some people to attend clean-ups. So we held a Sunday clean-up,” she says.

Prinsloo says 13 residents from Milnerton joined among the 30 volunteers. Together they picked up a whopping 162,2kg of litter.

Prinsloo says they found an unbelievable amount of broken glass.

A dead fish was one of the many items found.

The team managed to pick up 162,2kg of litter. Pictured here is some of the litter.

“An unbelievable amount of broken glass and loads of metal bottle caps. Public drinking at that parking area is still proving to be a huge problem. Quite a large number of nappies, a gazillion lollipop and earbud sticks and cigarettes – and of course clothing, plastic bags, condoms, a dead fish and all the other usual suspects,” she says.
