Amid tough economic conditions, more and more Capetonians are turning to chicken farming to supplement their income.

In fact, with broiler production, even beginners can make a lot of money within as little as five weeks.

This is the view of Farmer’s Inside Track Academy co-founder Kobus Louwrens.

The academy is currently accepting registrations for its next one-day training session on Saturday 9 April in Kraaifontein.

“The workshops attract a great diversity of people,” says Louwrens.

“Many are looking for a side-hustle. Broiler production is the ideal niche for beginners, because it doesn’t require a lot of start-up money.”

The Kraaifontein workshop is presented by Jo-Andra Cloete from Our Poultry Place in Joostenbergvlakte. She quit her office job a few years ago to explore farming after discovering it during her maternity leave.

“I was looking for a way to keep busy, and to boost my income. There is a big demand for broiler chickens, and I would recommend it for go-getters. It’s something you can do in your own backyard,” says Cloete.

Experts have listed broiler production as one of the 10 most lucrative farming ideas for this year, adds Louwrens.

“From Claremont and Khayelitsha to Bellville and Paarl, excitement is really building for the next workshop. It’s ideal for beginner farmers who want a quick profit. Broiler chickens grow fast. You can start selling them after just five weeks.”

Cape Town food technologist Precious Hlongwane from Parklands attended the previous training session. She says “attending this workshop has ignited that passion that I had for poultry farming. I believe that with the new knowledge I will be able to start my own poultry farm”.

To register for the Kraaifontein workshop, visit www.farmersinsidetrack.co.za or send a WhatsApp to 071 147 0388.

The registration fee of R1 950 includes training as well as mentorship by an experienced farmer.
