CAPE TOWN – An unusual morning commute turned into a rescue mission when a monkey was struck by a vehicle on the N1 highway, raising questions about how the animal ended up on one of Cape Town’s busiest routes.

A monkey was injured after being struck by a vehicle on the N1 outbound near Durban Road this morning, prompting responses from both the City of Cape Town and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

The incident occurred on the N1 near Durban Road in the direction of Bellville, with the SPCA confirming that the injured animal was transported to its animal hospital in Grassy Park for veterinary treatment.

Kevin Jacobs, spokesperson for the City’s Traffic Services, said: “Traffic officers were called to the scene of a motor vehicle accident on the N1 outbound at the Durban Road ramp at 09:39 this morning (Friday, 13 March). A vehicle hit a monkey, temporarily obstructing the centre lane. The vehicle involved in the accident left before officers arrived on the scene.”

The monkey’s origin remains unclear. “It is not clear where the monkey came from, but the injured animal was taken to the SPCA,” Jacobs added.

The incident temporarily disrupted traffic during the morning rush hour before traffic returned to normal.
