Alistair Izobell launched a talent competition linked to Mitchells Plain’s 50th Anniversary at the Department of Arts and Culture Open Day at the Rocklands Civic Centre on Tuesday 3 March.

The timing of the Mitchells Plain Star Search 2026 – Finding Our Star competition holds special significance for Izobell, who also turns 50 this year.

Seeking amateur talent

The competition invites aspiring singers, vocal groups, choirs and dancers aged between 16 and 30 to showcase their abilities. Only amateur performers are eligible to take part.

“We get to tell these stories by virtue of music and embrace people,” said Izobell during the announcement.

Entertainment as legitimate career

Izobell, who leads the initiative through his organisation Izobell’s Helping Hands NPC, emphasised that entertainment represents a valid career path that contributes to the economy.

“Entertainment is a real job people,” Izobell said, chuckling. “My oorlede ma het altyd vir my gesê: ‘My boy, now what you gonna really do?’ And I used to say: ‘Ma, ek werk! Die singery is eintlik n werk.’ So, we want to tell people that contributing to the entertainment industry is also contributing to the GDP of the city, town and country.”

The entertainer, who has enjoyed a 40-year career, credited the Mitchells Plain community for his success.

Industry backing

The talent search has received support from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and MEC Ricardo Mackenzie. Renowned industry professionals will serve as judges, whilst the initiative will feature vibrant social media interaction.
