In a country with extremely high crime rates the Mfuleni policing precinct has once again shown it is one of the most dangerous areas in the country to be in.
If not uppermost, it certainly features in the top 10.
Police Minister Bheki Cele on Friday released the quarterly crime statistics (third quarter, October 2023 to December 2023) and again it shows that South Africa is not for the faint-hearted. In the time under review 7 710 murders were investigated, an increase of 2,1% on the previous quarter. In addition, 12 200 cases of rape were investigated, and even though there is slight decline of 1,7% it underscores how dangerous the country is, especially for women.
And some of the most dangerous places are serviced by the Mfuleni police.
In the murder category Mfuleni saw a decrease, of nine murders less than the last quarter, but it remained second in the country. Ten fewer murders were committed in Delft in the same period, but it had eight more attempted murders (a 16,3% increase).
Mfuleni again topped the list with 35 more counts of sexual offences than in the last quarter, while there were eight fewer in Delft. Thirty more people were raped in the Mfuleni precinct, again the highest in the country, with a total of 83.
Mfuleni is sixth on the community-reported serious crimes list, with an increase of 66, or 3,3%. Contact crimes increased by 10%, at 113. These include murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, rape, sexual assault, attempted sexual offences, contact sexual assault and assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm. Mfuleni is number 1 on this list with Delft in 5th place, with an increase of 12,4% or 111 crimes.
