Three suspects have been arrested over the weekend in connection with the stabbing death of a matric learner in Silversands.
Mtoti Simzukisoe (18), a Grade 12 learner at Fairdale High School was dressed in his school uniform when he was stabbed in the left side of his chest and shoulder. He passed away on his way to the Delft Day Hospital.
According to WO November Filander, a police spokesperson, the police received word of a fight going on at the school. “When the police arrived the victim was already taken to hospital. There were witnesses who pointed out the accused. They have been arrested and appeared in court,” says Filander.
Filander says at this stage it is not clear if the attackers are also learners at the school or what lead to the altercation.
Bronagh Hammond from the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) says the department will provide counselling for the learners. “The learner was stabbed outside the school at the end of the school day. Our condolences go out to the family, friends and the school community,” says Hammond.
Sarah Ludick, a member of the local walking bus, says it happens a lot that learners fight among themselves.
“When the school was built, the community was not happy because most of the learners come from another area. We do not know what the reason for the fight was, but the community is in shock,” says Ludick.
She says she hopes that the accused are punished for what they have done.
Fairdale High School was in the news last week when learners from the school started acting strange. It was later believed to have been some sort of ritual gone wrong.
