Sandy bits of ground alongside Driebergen Road and the outside perimeter fence of the Kuils River Technical High School in Highbury are slowly but surely making way for greenery.

“It’s a work in progress,” says Graham Dyers, the resident who took it upon himself to change the aesthetics of his neighbourhood.

Dyers says he is just someone who really enjoys gardening and rather than waiting on the City to do something he is willing to roll up his sleeves.

Hence, whenever he has some free time – mainly weekends as he has a fulltime job – he will be busy planting alongside the road or adding some compost to improve the sandy soil.

“I buy most of the plants and compost and sometimes hire services to do some of the hard labour,” he says.

He would welcome cuttings or plant donations.
