The N1 in Cape Town.

A R3 billion project will see the upgrade of the N1 from Old Oak to Koelenhof interchange by the South African Roads Agency (Sanral), which is currently doing final preparations for the project to go to market.

According to a media statement issued by the agency, a detailed design has been completed for the N1 improvements for the approximately 13 km distance between the interchanges.

The project entails upgrading from four lanes to a six-to-eight-lane divided highway, five major interchange upgrades and pedestrian safety infrastructure, including street lighting over the entire length.

According to a project description presentation seen by TygerBurger other interchange upgrades include the Stellenberg (the ramps excluded from the scope), Brackenfell Boulevard, Okavango and Brighton Road bridges as well as the Joostenbergvlakte interchange.

According to the presentation the tender advertisement was advertised on 12 July, and construction is estimated to start in February 2025 and end in June 2028 for a period of 40 months.

Randall Cable, regional manager for the western region, said this aggressive drive to put work out into the market speaks to Sanral’s commitment to economic recovery.

“The Sanral footprint is growing,” he said, “and a continuous pipeline of projects both to maintain and develop our national road network is key to stimulate economy growth and the creation of job opportunities.”

TygerBurger will publish more detailed information as soon as it becomes available.
