The City of Cape Town has kicked off the new year with major road rehabilitation works along La Belle Road in Stikland as part of ongoing efforts to improve the area’s deteriorating infrastructure. The comprehensive upgrade project, which began on Monday 12 January, will continue until Friday 31 July, affecting the stretch between Strand Road and Willow Street.
The rehabilitation works include several key improvements to the busy route:
• Complete rehabilitation of the existing pavement sub-base, base layer and wearing course
• Repairs to sidewalks with new surfacing where needed
• Realignment and replacement of channels and kerbs
• Reinstatement of all road markings removed during construction
Work will take place from 07:00 to 17:00, Monday to Saturday, weather permitting and subject to unforeseen delays. Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayco member for urban mobility, acknowledged the significance of the project for the community.
“The City is starting the year with much-needed road rehabilitation works in Stikland. The affected road is currently in a poor condition and requires comprehensive upgrades,” said Quintas.
“I would like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience over the next six months while construction is under way. These improvements form part of ongoing efforts to keep Cape Town moving.”
Quintas emphasised that once completed, the project will deliver a safer, more reliable road, improved stormwater infrastructure and upgraded sidewalks for the area.
Traffic disruptions expected
Road users should expect significant congestion during the six-month construction period and are strongly urged to use alternative routes where possible.
The City has advised motorists to exercise caution while work is underway by:
• Reducing speed in construction zones
• Paying attention to road signs
• Remaining vigilant in and around roadworks areas
• Watching for uneven road surfaces
• Being mindful of construction workers
• Following instructions from flag personnel
With La Belle Road being a key route for many Bellville commuters, residents and businesses are encouraged to plan additional travel time and explore alternative routes during construction hours. For more information and alternative route maps, visit the City of Cape Town website.
