Three Lions clubs came together to spend a day caring for vulnerable people at the Salvation Army.

The Lions Club of Mitchells Plain teamed up with the Lions Clubs of Athlone and Cape of Good Hope, along with the Connect a Heart Foundation, for the outreach programme.

Bringing people together

Club chair for Marketing and Public Relations for Mitchells Plain Lions, Bevil Lackay, said the day was about care, dignity and human connection. Volunteers and vulnerable members of the community were brought together for the event.

The Connect a Heart Foundation ran an art activity, giving participants a chance to express themselves. The relaxed space allowed people to engage, create and enjoy one another’s company.

Practical help on the day

The Lions clubs donated non-perishable food items and dignity packs to assist those in need.

Participants were also treated to basic nail care. Blood pressure and blood sugar checks were offered as part of the day’s wellness activities.

Alongside the practical support, there was plenty of laughter, conversation and a sense of togetherness shared by Lions members, volunteers and participants on Saturday, 22 August.

Serving the community

The Lions Club of Mitchells Plain is a community-based service organisation that responds to local needs through practical projects in the greater Mitchells Plain area.

The club is part of Lions Clubs International, a worldwide network of nearly 1.4 million Lions who serve communities in more than 200 countries.

Through its service projects, the Mitchells Plain club has already reached more than 25 000 people in the past year.

How to get involved

Lackay said the club welcomes community members who would like to serve and help make a lasting difference.
