The first group of attendees at the learner licence training last week.

The first group of beneficiaries from a learner drivers licence training programme in Ward 19 wrote the exam on Sunday 2 April.

Ward 19 councillor Ebrahim Sawant says he allocated R250 000 from his ward allocation budget for this year towards the programme.

Sawant says the decision for the allocation came after he received several requests from young people and youth forums in the ward who complained about a bleak future as many are unemployed.

A group of 100 young people were drawn from all the communities in the ward to benefit from the programme.

Siyasamnkela Vutula from the City’s urban regeneration department arranged a series of workshops for the trainees.

The training as well as the fee for the learner licences are paid from the ward allocation.

“I am confident of a good pass rate as these learners are inspired by the prospects of being able to one day drive to work or get a drivers job,” Sawant says.

The group of 100 were divided into two groups, to attend classes over four days. The first group started class on Wednesday 29 March.

The attendees are provided with transport to the venues (in Kuils River and Wesbank respectively) and also receive lunch.
