Shortly after the start of the new year, the Table View police arrested a 39-year-old man who is facing a charge of being in possession of an illegal substance.
According to Table View police spokesperson Capt Adriana Chandler, during their patrols in Table View, shortly after midnight on Thursday 6 January, officers noticed a man walking in the road, and he appeared nervous when he saw the police vehicle.
“The officers approached the man to ascertain what he was doing out so late on the street. The man appeared even more nervous, and the officers instinctively knew this man was up to no good. He was asked to be searched, and the man complied. During their search, they found crystal methamphetamine on his person. Eleven plastic bags with the drug were found, as well as one Mandrax tablet,” Chandler says.
He will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Friday 07 January.
In a separate incident on Friday 31 December 2021, police officials were conducting routine crime prevention patrols in the Parklands area.
A police officer noticed the owner of a local laundromat carrying a bag, and acting very nervous, when he noticed the police vehicle.
Chandler says the officer decided to investigate a bit further, and drove towards the known man.
“When asked what was inside the bag, the man handed it over to the police officer, and said that he was given the bag and asked to drop it off at the parking area of a shopping centre in the Table View area,” Chandler says.
The officer opened the bag and immediately recognised the contents inside a plastic bag as Mandrax tablets.
The man then offered the officer R1 000 not to arrest him.
“The officer arrested him for being in possession of illegal substances, dealing in an illegal substance and bribery. It was confirmed that there were one thousand Mandrax tablets in the plastic bag,” Chandler told TygerBurger.
The 54-year-old suspect was taken to the Table View Police Station, where he will be detained until his court appearance.
