The sewage spilling into the Milnerton Lagoon recently was because the Koeberg Pump Station at the Theo Marais Canal had failed due to a faulty electrical drive.
This is the response from Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for water and waste in the City of Cape Town.
“When the complaint was lodged sandbags were installed on the weir to raise the level and contain the majority of the sewage. Bio-enzymes were applied and the City’s water pollution control conducted sampling. A mobile pump was used to remove sewage from the containment area and the faulty electrical drive was replaced on the same day,” says Badroodien.
The incident was reported on Tuesday 17 May at 12:46 and attended to urgently, with a resolution by 17:20.
“In the past a request was tabled for an overflow pond and I can confirm that an overflow pond was used during the incident. The sewage was removed from the canal to the overflow pond with the use of a mobile pump,” he says.
