Kuils River Runners Club is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year on the back of another strong performance in the Western Province Athletics (WPA) Coca-Cola League, where it secured second place and R15 000 in prize money for the 2025 season.
The achievement follows an outstanding first-place finish in 2024 and further cements the club’s reputation as one of the region’s leading athletics clubs since its founding in 2016.
Club chair Megan Classen said the 2025 WPA Coca-Cola League proved highly competitive, with 108 road running clubs participating across 12 race fixtures between January and December.
“Clubs had to field as many athletes as possible at each predetermined race,” Classen explained. “Every permanently licensed athlete who finished within the stipulated cut-off time earned one point for their club, making depth, commitment and participation key to success.”
ARD Running Club topped the final standings with 1 096 points, earning R20 000, while Kuils River Runners Club finished with 1 040 points. Pinelands Running Club secured third place and R10 000.
The club’s success extended beyond league performance last year. Club members Petro van Jaarsveld and Graham Katzen represented Western Province Athletics at the national championships. Tumelo Mokatsi, Morne Kammies and Barry-John Pienaar represented WP at the SA Masters Athletics Championships. Mokatsi received his national colours.

Membership
The club’s recent growth has been particularly impressive, with membership expanding exponentially since 2023 — from just 30 members to 160 by the end of last year.
“This rapid expansion reflects not only the club’s competitive success but also its welcoming culture and strong sense of belonging,” said Classen.
What began as a small, passionate group has evolved into a vibrant and inclusive club that continues to attract athletes of all ages and abilities.
The club prides itself on being more than just a running club, providing a supportive environment for runners, walkers and junior athletes. From seasoned competitors to beginners and young aspiring runners, everyone has a place to grow, stay active and feel encouraged.
Community
Classen emphasised the club’s role in promoting healthy lifestyles, community engagement and youth development within Kuils River and surrounding areas.

“The club’s consistent performances in the WPA Coca-Cola League highlight the dedication of our athletes, coaches and volunteers, whose commitment continues to deliver results both on and off the road,” she said.
As the club enters its second decade, the focus remains on building from strength to strength — developing talent, increasing participation and continuing to represent the community with pride. “With a solid foundation and a clear vision, the future looks bright for this thriving community club,” Classen said.
