The latest crime statistics – covering the fourth quarter of the 2021-’22 financial year, January to March – puts Kraaifontein back on the top 30 list of the most violent crime areas in South Africa.
With 54 reported murder cases, the highest since 2018 for this quarter, Kraaifontein tops the list in fourth position.
After a decline in the murder rate over the past two years, new data now shows a 15% increase.
With a total of 180 reported contact crimes that include attempted murder, sexual offences, assault and robbery, Kraaifontein takes up fifth position on the national list.
A total of 34 attempted murder cases and 40 rape cases were reported, as well as 333 assault cases were recorded of which 111 were with the intend to do grievous bodily harm.
Some 142 robbery cases were reported of which 107 were with aggravated circumstances.
Seven business robberies and 36 home robberies were reported during this quarter.
However, property related crimes have shown a significant overall decrease of 17,8%. With 27 cases, business burglaries reduced by 30%, and home burglaries with 160 cases, by 3,6%.
A total of 17 vehicles (15 cars and two trucks) were hijacked and 21 cars were reported stolen.
Some 52 cases of theft from motor vehicles were reported.
Furthermore, 994 drug related crimes were recorded, showing a 141% increase and 28 cases of possession of illegal firearms or ammunition were also reported.
Both these categories reflect crimes detected as a result of police action.
