Cape Town’s Jazz In The City walkabout festival returns this winter with the next instalment of its Inter-Generational Conversations series.

Following the launch event in March, which featured father and son musicians Steve and Bokani Dyer, the series will now bring together veteran performer Madala Kunene and guitarist Sibusile Xaba.

The internationally recognised duo will combine jazz, malombo, maskandi and Zulu blues in a performance celebrating both musical heritage and contemporary expression.

Distinctive sound

Kunene, who grew up in Cato Manor, is regarded as an elder statesman of South African music. His distinctive sound and long career have taken him from local stages to audiences around the world.

Xaba is known for his spiritual approach to guitar and for reinterpreting maskandi and avant-garde music through a contemporary lens.

Together, the musicians promise an evening that connects tradition with innovation, and the past with the future.

Musical dialogue

Their performance is expected to explore cultural continuity through a musical dialogue between two generations.

The concert takes place on Wednesday 29 July at 20:00 at the Homecoming Centre in District Six.
