Mouldy ceilings and leaking roofs are part and parcel of everyday life for residents in council flats in Scottsville.

And despite having complained about this since 2014, no repairs or maintenance has yet been done.

In an urgent motion brought to Subcouncil 2 last week, ward councillor Brenda Hansen highlighted the plight of this community saying that the above-mentioned conditions of living in the flats were inhumane.

“Living in these conditions are unhealthy and unsafe to residents with loose hanging, molded ceilings being the norm.

“The past and current winters have not been kind to the struggling residents of Scottsville, many of whom live in the City’s rental units. Over the years the community have complained to the human settlements department with no joy of any maintenance being done,” she said at a Subcouncil 2 meeting held at the library hall in Kraaifontein on Wednesday.

Hansen requested that an urgent investigation be done by the City’s human settlement directorate on all the rental units in Scottsville to be finalised within the next six months.

They further moved that following the investigation repairs and maintenance work commenced in units with quarterly reports being handed in on progress.
