The Cape Town High Court handed a sentence of two life terms plus 15 years’ direct imprisonment down to Reagen Williams, who was convicted for his role in a murder and an attempted murder that took place in Northpine in January 2020.

On 31 January that year, at approximately 04:00, suspects gained access to a residence at 6 Conifer Close, Northpine.

“The attack was orchestrated by the victim’s husband, Brent Williams, who left the front door open and later acted as getaway driver,” police spokesperson Lt-Col Malcolm Pojie related. “The hired hitman and accomplice proceeded directly to the backyard granny flat, knowing the wife, their intended target, would be praying with her parents as part of a regular Muslim tradition.

“The suspects attacked the wife’s parents, fatally stabbing the father-in-law. The wife, who was running late that morning, heard the commotion and managed to lock the suspects outside the main house. They fled the scene over the garage roof and were picked up by Williams nearby.”

Following an intensive investigation by Kraaifontein police both Brent and Reagen Williams were arrested and charged. Brent died from a heart attack in police custody in February 2025 and the case proceeded against Reagen, who was convicted on 27 March.

The court sentenced him to 15 years each on the counts of housebreaking with intent to commit murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. He received life imprisonment and another 10 years for the two counts of attempted murder as well as another life sentence for murder.

Three of the counts will run concurrently, resulting in an effective sentence of two life sentences plus 15 years, according to Pojie.
