Three people have sustained minor injuries, while another sustained a serious injury following a collision between a light motor vehicle and a cart horse on Frans Conradie Drive, Parow, last week.
The accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon 27 September.
“When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene shortly before noon, they found three patients seated on the pavement while the fourth was lying in the road.
“The patient lying in the road had sustained serious injuries, while the other three had sustained minor injuries. All were treated at the scene before the seriously injured patient was transported to the hospital for further medical care. The other three declined to be transported to the hospital,” says Ineke van Huyssteen, ER24 spokesperson.
While the horse initially fled the scene, it was subsequently located unharmed, she said.
“The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not known to our paramedics,” Van Huyssteen says.
TygerBurger is still waiting on feedback from the Parow police.
Johan Schrönen, a bystander, was at the scene of the accident.
“We were sitting in a shop nearby and heard the bang. A friend of mine was able to see a guy flying through the air and when we got closer, we saw that halfway down the bridge a wreck of a car was on top of the cart which broke in half.
“The impact of the accident swung the car right around, almost 180 degrees, which indicate a fairly hard impact. The man said he came over the bridge and suddenly the cart horse was in front of him,” says Schrönen.
Karin Paschen, spokesperson for the Cart Horse Protection Association, says the organisation is aware of the accident. One of their inspectors were on the scene to tend to the horse. “She trucked him home and gave him pain medication,” Paschen says.
Law enforcement has to take the matter further, she adds.
