Hip Hop Encounter, which focuses on the vibrant history of street dance and Hip-Hop culture will take place at Artscape Theatre on Saturday 5 April at 14:30.

The show follows a series of workshops and masterclasses hosted in Atlantis and facilitated by DJ Ready D, Concrete Apostles, and Lyrical Deezy.

Densley Carolissen (aka Lyrical Deezy), founder of Elite Movement Dance Studio, will premiere a new piece at the festival. His focus is Hip Hop, Popping and Locking House. He won Choreographer of the Year at the South African Dance Awards in 2022.

Masterclasses

The programme will showcase the results of the masterclasses held in Atlantis with new work by various crews.

MoveMakers, a group that runs weekly classes to develop Hip Hop in their community, will premiere the piece “In the Multiverse”.

Atlantis All Stars will present “Heal the World Through Dance”.

Talent

The goals of this company include “to remain dedicated and disciplined throughout their dance journey, to innovate within the dance industry, to be goal-driven, to seize every opportunity with enthusiasm, and to take initiative”.

Dynamite Dance Crew, a passionate team focused on motivating and strengthening talent, will present a work called “Passion Explosion”.

Dynamic Dance Crew, led by Aneeqa Gelant, a go-getter who loves dancing, will present “In the Jungle”.

New Chapter

Ingrid Beets School of Dance will present “The Power Within”, and Gervano Grainger will complete the programme with a solo work.

Hip Hop Encounters is a new chapter of a long-term engagement by the non-profit Very Real Time, which has supported community dance crews and youth activists in Atlantis since 2019.

Youth dance initiatives provide children with healthy afterschool activities where they can develop their talents and stay out of trouble in a town plagued by gang violence.
