A young gymnast from Parow is preparing to take part in a once in a lifetime competition in North America later this year.

Laylah Schreuder (12), a Grade 6 learner at the Holy Cross Sisters School, and several others in her gymnastics club, All Stars Gymnastics Club in Durbanville, have been invited to compete in Florida in the United States of America in June this year. “Competing in the USA is a dream come true for Laylah,” says mom, Christen Schreuder.

Laylah became a member of the club in 2018, while in Grade 1.

Laylah, who represented Western Province in Johannesburg in October 2023, is one of 11 girls from her club who will be making the trip along with two coaches. Some of the parents will also be joining them on the trip, her mom says.

To help the members realise their dream of competing in the USA, money needs to be raised.

“As a gymnastics club, we are arranging fundraising events. We had a movie night for the children, and there was a great turnout. We are looking for sponsorship for backpacks, T-shirts, team leotards, water bottles, etcetera.”

The next fundraising event will be at Ipic Shopping Centre Aurora in Durbanville where they hope to have a raffle.

The raffle tickets will be sold in the coming weeks and the draw will take place at the mall.

Christen also started a BackaBuddy page.

Her family is hoping to raise R87 511.
