As unregistered and bogus institutions continue to exploit students, the Government Communication and Information System has warned prospective students to exercise caution when applying to colleges.
The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) said fraudulent colleges operate illegally without proper registration with the DHET, Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), or other recognised authorities.
“Qualifications offered by these institutions are not accredited and have no value for employment, further studies, or official recognition,” the government statement warned in a press release.

Students are strongly advised to verify the registration status of any college before enrolling by requesting to see a valid registration certificate or by confirming directly with the Department of Higher Education and Training.
The DHET, working alongside law enforcement agencies, continues to identify and shut down bogus colleges that exploit students seeking placement opportunities, the release said.
Citizens are encouraged to report suspected bogus colleges or any irregular practices to the DHET immediately.
To determine if a college is properly registered, prospective students can visit the DHET website at www.dhet.gov.za or contact the department’s toll-free number on 0800 872 222.
The warning comes as the new academic year approaches and thousands of students across the country search for available spaces at institutions of higher learning.
