Goodwood swimming pool is set to re-open late December, says the ward councillor.

  • Goodwood public pools have remained closed for months due to ongoing plant room and mechanical repairs.
  • Despite spotting activity at the site, residents have received little communication about reopening.
  • The City of Cape Town is now targeting December for the pools’ reopening, giving locals hope after months of delays.

Will the Goodwood public pools ever re-open? That’s the question on the minds of many frustrated residents as they eagerly await updates from the City of Cape Town.

One local resident recalls that back on 7 February, an anonymous official said that an “assessment is currently underway” to address the ongoing issues, with the promise that pool users would be kept informed. However, months have passed, with no updates.

A sign was once placed at the pool gate reading “Due to unforeseen circumstances”, only to be replaced later by a “Closed until further notice” sign.

Activity on site

Despite the lack of clarity, activity has been spotted on-site.

“Practically every day, managers, security staff, and council vehicles have been present.

“Renovation supplies have been delivered, and the pool water has been treated, drained, and refilled.

“But the broken fibreglass sheeting at the entrance remains unrepaired,” the resident claims.

Ward councillor Cecile Janse van Rensburg, who oversees Ward 27 where the Goodwood pools are located, explained that the pool closure is due to ongoing plant room and mechanical repairs.

“Municipal outdoor pools typically open to the public from October or November until March or April the following year.

“Unfortunately, the Goodwood Pool did not open last year and has remained closed due to maintenance and repair challenges,” Janse van Rensburg said.

Despite the delays, Janse van Rensburg shares that the City is working toward reopening the pool by late December, giving residents a potential timeline to look forward to.
