Golden Arrow Bus Service (GABS) says the vandalism of its buses is not merely a company issue, but a community safety concern that puts passengers and drivers at risk and takes vital vehicles off the road.

Call for communities to protect buses

Bronwen Dyke-Beyer, GABS spokesperson, was responding to a statement by the Democratic Alliance (DA) calling on communities to help protect public transport infrastructure following an alarming 582 incidents of bus stoning between 1 April and 31 July 2026, compared with 1 896 incidents recorded during the 2025/26 financial year.

“The incidents have serious consequences for commuters, drivers and public transport operations. During the first four months of 2026/27, three passengers were injured in GABS bus-stoning incidents, while the estimated damage to GABS buses amounted to R2.81 million,” the DA statement reads.

Protect infrastructure

Dyke-Beyer says Golden Arrow welcomes the DA’s call for communities to help protect public transport infrastructure. “We urge communities across Cape Town to join our call: ‘Hands off our buses’. Whatever the concern, vandalism is not the answer. Our buses are there to serve communities, and protecting them is a shared responsibility,” she says.
