Gift of the Givers has launched a major nutritional support programme targeting vulnerable young children and early childhood development (ECD) centres across the Western Cape, as the organisation steps up its response to food insecurity and malnutrition.

The organisation’s programme comes alongside ongoing efforts to provide nutritional support to babies, young children and families experiencing financial hardship.

Gift of the Givers said its work is focused on communities where unemployment and food insecurity leave families struggling to provide nutritious meals for their children.

“Backing the global fight against hunger, our aim is to contribute tellingly in the quest to save the lives of the starving and malnourished – human or animal,” the organisation said.

Support reaches rural communities

The organisation has recently worked with healthcare clinics across the Western Cape to distribute baby cereal donated by Nestlé.

Following flooding in parts of the province, Gift of the Givers teams continued supporting vulnerable communities in the Breede Valley District and Cape Winelands, where many seasonal farm workers were affected by unemployment, food insecurity and malnutrition.

Working with clinic heads, the organisation distributed cereal to identified patients at De Doorns, Touws River, Worcester and Robertson clinics.

Similar distributions were carried out at clinics in Kylemore, Idas Valley and Cloetesville, as well as Citrusdal and Piketberg.

Further distributions reached Kabaskraal, Chatsworth, Malmesbury Day, Moorreesburg and Abbotsdale clinics.

Gift of the Givers said its longstanding relationships with local health clinics help identify families most in need of assistance.

“For many recipients, facing unemployment and financial hardship, this donation provides more than food – it offers nourishment, relief and hope,” the organisation said.

Focus on early childhood

The new nutritional programme extends beyond emergency food distributions, with ECD centres and young children forming a major part of the organisation’s current focus.

Gift of the Givers said supporting children early in life is an important part of its broader response to hunger and malnutrition. The organisation’s interventions include providing food directly to communities while also looking at longer-term solutions to food insecurity.

“Apart from such short-term assistance, we continuously search for and deliver effective solutions, designed to give effect to long-term change,” Gift of the Givers said.

This includes developing and implementing small-scale self-help agricultural projects aimed at empowering communities to improve their food security.

More than emergency relief

Gift of the Givers said its work extends from providing meals to vulnerable children to assisting communities affected by disasters and other crises.

It also makes its Sibusiso Food Supplement available as a nutritional support product. According to the organisation, the groundnut-based, high-energy and protein supplement does not require refrigeration and is particularly suited to disaster-relief situations.

The organisation said its overall objective remains focused on ensuring people affected by hunger and malnutrition receive nutritional assistance while longer-term solutions are developed.

Its latest work in the Western Cape combines these approaches, with donations such as the Nestlé baby cereal being channelled through established clinic networks to reach mothers and children identified as vulnerable.

“From serving a warm plate of food to a starving child… we work tirelessly to ensure those in need are freed from hunger,” Gift of the Givers said.
