Residents in Brooklyn, and further afield, can now complete their matric at the Community Learning Centre in Brooklyn with the Vulamthuba Empumelelo’s Matric (Senior Certificate) Programme.
Reyana Nacerodien, head of marketing and communications at Communicare, says the programme is one of the organisation’s critical economic mobility programmes.
“It offers students a simplified and flexible curriculum that can be completed within one year, with a maximum of six subjects.
“The curriculum allows students to attend classes weekly on Saturdays and is open to all communities in the Cape Metro region.”
The matric programme is largely subsidised, but a small fee of R200 is charged per subject.
Sponsorship is made available for learners with academic potential who are economically disadvantaged.
Learners get to borrow all textbooks for free but have to return the books after finishing the programme.
“The subjects in 2022 are mathematics, physical sciences, geography, economics, business studies, history, mathematical literacy and languages (English, Afrikaans and Xhosa).
“We currently have 20 students who are Communicare tenants and non-tenants from Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Retreat, Diep River, Delft and surrounding areas.
“Although our programme is progressing, we still need assistance to maximise the use of the Community Learning Centre, such as computers for e-learning during the week, as we can only afford to have teachers once a week.
“We also need desks, writing boards and textbooks. We aim to make the Community Learning Centre an innovation hub for the Brooklyn community and other communities in the Metro,” she says.
