A man was arrested in Wesbank yesterday for the possession of a homemade
firearm and the unlawful possession of ammunition.
His arrest comes after the City of Cape Town’s Law
Enforcement School Resource Officers (SROs) were called after a complaint, of
gangsters fighting in front of a school in Wesbank, was received.
“When the officers arrived they noticed an adult male
standing in the road with what appeared to be a firearm. As they approached him
he threw the object into a yard and fled. The officers gave chase and quickly
caught him,” says spokesperson for the City’s Law Enforcement, Wayne Dyason.
Officers retrieved a home-made firearm loaded with an AK47
round in the chamber. The arrested suspect was charged with possession of a
homemade firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition, and was taken to the
Mfuleni Police Station.
“The SROs will make every effort to make schools, where they
are deployed, a safe space, especially now that final exams are on the
horizon,” says Dyason.
