In a heartwarming initiative aimed at supporting local youth, the Patriotic Alliance’s Ward 28 residents organised a free back-to-school haircut event in Ruyterwacht. On this day, 24 young individuals aged 9 to 18 received professional haircuts, ensuring they returned to school looking sharp and confident.
“The free haircuts not only provided practical benefits but also fostered a sense of community. By offering this service, the Patriotic Alliance demonstrated its commitment to supporting local families, particularly during a time when many are preparing for the new school year,” says Nolan Hartzenberg, founder of the haircut initiative.
The event ran from 09:00 to 17:30 on Monday 30 September with participants being transported to and from their homes, ensuring accessibility for all. This thoughtful arrangement allowed youth from various backgrounds to take part without the burden of transportation costs.
According to Hartzenberg, a fresh haircut can significantly enhance self-esteem, particularly for young individuals heading back to school. Feeling good about their appearance can positively affect their social interactions and academic performance.
“For many families, the cost of haircuts can add up, especially with multiple children. This event alleviated some financial pressure, allowing families to allocate their resources elsewhere,” says Hartzenberg.
He adds that events like this strengthen community ties, promoting unity and support among residents. It encourages a culture of giving back, inspiring others to contribute to local initiatives.
“Local barbers and stylists involved in the event not only provided their services but also engaged with the youth, offering advice on personal grooming and hygiene,” says Hartzenberg.
He concludes that such events highlight the positive impact that local organisations can have on the lives of youth and families, paving the way for a brighter future.
