Advance Edukos Foundation will host a Lights On Afterschool community walk on 24 October.

The event will run from 07:00 to 16:00 and will bring together children and young people from different afterschool programme sites, non-profit organisations, community groups, libraries, volunteers, parents, past participants and community members.

The walk will start in Schaapkraal and move through Strandfontein, Bayview and False Bay before ending at the Rocklands Library, where different aspects of afterschool programming will be showcased.

The Lights On Afterschool initiative aims to make afterschool work more visible in communities and to strengthen collaboration between organisations working with children and young people.

Safety measures

Safety will be a priority throughout the project. The walk will be supervised by designated adults and volunteers, with support vehicles available for children who need assistance. Water and toilet breaks will be built into the route.

Participating organisations will be expected to maintain appropriate supervision and child protection measures. Emergency contact information and safety requirements will be included in the event planning.

Community members will also be invited to run small stalls.

The foundation is seeking sponsorships and contributions of goods or services to reduce the direct cost of the event.
