A firefighter’s first thought is always assisting those in need, and that is why Jermaine Carelse is preparing to tackle the 12th Grandads Army Memorial Ride.

Worry-free and entertaining

The Grandads Army Memorial Ride is a fun, worry-free and entertaining cycling event designed for all levels of cyclists, in support of the Eyabantwana Trust, an independent non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the Department of Paediatric Surgery – East London, based at Frere and Cecilia Makiwane Hospitals.

Established in 2013, the Trust aims to enhance surgical care for children from across the Eastern Cape, many of whom travel vast distances to access treatment. Serving one of South Africa’s poorest provinces, the Trust helps to overcome the financial constraints that limit the upgrade of facilities and the acquisition of essential medical equipment.

Carelse will be participating in his eighth ride. “I even rode during the Covid-19 pandemic. I was introduced to this remarkable charitable ride by an ex-colleague, Dino Levendal, an avid cyclist. Over the years, I have contributed by hosting raffles and donating prizes such as books, wine and chocolates. This year, my goal is to raise more than R10 000 for the cause,” says Carelse, Divisional Commander: Command and Control Centre at the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services.

According to Carelse, they are a group of more than 36 cyclists, excluding the support staff, who will depart from East London on 7 March and arrive in Gordon’s Bay on 11 March. “The camaraderie and bonds formed along the journey are truly special, knowing that we are all riding for the same purpose. I have had the opportunity to meet and interact with many inspiring individuals during these tours, and the memories created will last a lifetime. I am in the fortunate position where I can do two things I am passionate about: riding a bike and raising funds,” says Carelse.
