Good news for Philippi residents – two new footbridges at the Vygekraal and Duinefontein intersections along Govan Mbeki Road are taking shape and should be ready by the end of January 2026.
This week, Mayco Member for Urban Mobility Rob Quintas and Senior Project Manager Jade De Leeuw took a closer look at the progress on site. Quintas was clearly pleased with what he saw. “It is truly encouraging to see the progress and the hard work of our teams on the ground, and I also want to thank our commuters and local communities for their continued support,” he said.
The bridges are being built as part of the Govan Mbeki Road widening project, which required a retaining wall along the Lotus River canal. “We used this opportunity to build two new footbridges across the Lotus Canal,” Quintas explained.
The bridges will make a real difference for local families, particularly when it comes to getting children safely to and from school.
“The bridges will make it possible for pedestrians, especially children, to safely cross the canal,” Quintas said. “I also want to add that the bridges are aligned with public transport pick-up points and pedestrian crossings, all aimed at keeping Cape Town moving, safely.”
The elevated Duinefontein Road bridge will also serve as part of the infrastructure for the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service expansion in the area.If all goes according to plan, residents can expect fully completed bridges – complete with handrails – by the end of January, barring any unforeseen delays.
