Filmmaker Nic Matthee is focused on expanding a new mid-length film production that aims to unite communities across Velddrif, Vredenburg, Malmesbury, and the Cape Flats.
Diverse communities
Matthee’s goal is to bring diverse communities together on a single motion picture. He says the cross-community approach bridges cultural divides, empowers marginalised groups, and promotes meaningful social change — cultivating empathy, sparking new creative narratives, and nurturing a shared local identity.
Having recently completed Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, set to be released on 27 August 2026 on Tubi TV and the Red Moon Performing Arts YouTube channel, Matthee says he wants to move towards a more dramatic style — a departure from the crime action genre for which he is known. He believes that bringing people from diverse backgrounds together on a single film project is a worthwhile endeavour. “I recently visited Vredenburg and have also set my sights on various locations where I believe local talent can positively contribute by integrating the rural lifestyle with the urban vibrancy, demonstrating how universal talent can be and how we can make a positive impact in other areas of interest,” says Matthee.
The forthcoming production is titled Fighting Dirty, with cameras scheduled to roll in May 2027. Filming will commence in Velddrif and Vredenburg, with additional locations including Eerste River, Delft, Belhar, and Mitchells Plain. Matthee remains committed to his mission of nurturing and showcasing local talent in the Cape Flats, using his non-profit platform to promote sustained growth in the performing arts.
Across his body of work, his filmmaking approach consistently integrates psychological complexity, action-oriented plots, and community-centred narratives, frequently employing practical effects, emphasising female empowerment, and mentoring emerging talent.
Sports action
Fighting Dirty has yet to secure a lead actress or supporting cast. As a sports action drama, Matthee says casting may begin sooner than usual given the need for training, choreographed fight sequences, and drama preparation.
