SA Water Warriors are in need of donations to make their outreaches to drought-affected areas a success.
With each outreach the SA Water Warriors group makes up boxes to hand over to the farmer wives, along with the water and feed.
Deon Smit, founder of SA Water Warriors, said the idea of making boxes for farmers’ wives and women farmworkers came about due to the understanding that they are the people who have to make sure things go well at home while the men on the farm have to keep things going. He said: “The women must stand strong and carry the men through difficult times as well as keep the household going and look after the children.”
Lizanne Scholtz, who is in charge of the Boervrou-boksies boxes, said black Woolworths shopping bags were needed as well as toiletries, mostly shampoo, soap, earbuds, razors, Dettol, roll-on, body lotion, tissues, pads, toothpaste, Vaseline and plasters. Anything is welcome, she said, as she finds some people put a facecloth, chocolate or biscuits into the boxes too.
‘Eye opening’
Scholtz said about a year ago she took part in an outreach to Tankwa with Smit and his group at that time.
“I am proud to be part of that group. That was really an eye opener for me as person, I felt the heartache and saw the suffering in the people. The thankfulness for the little we brought and that made me want to be part of the South African Water Warriors. I wanted to get involved, and the Boervrou-boksie was my way of making a difference. I thought it is only by donations that we can do it. We do need the public’s help,” Scholtz said.
According to Smit these boxes mean that with each outreach together with the food parcels and feed, the women are also looked after.
