The school grounds of Fanie Theron Primary School in Kraaifontein were abuzz with excitement on Saturday as the school played host to a family market and animal-adoption day.

What started as a community-service project quickly turned into a heartwarming event, showcasing the bonds between community members and furry friends in need of forever homes.

From 10:00 to 15:00, the school’s athletics field was transformed into a vibrant fair, complete with food stalls, arts and crafts, a secure kiddie’s play area and a host of adorable animals from Graceland Animal Sanctuary in Joostenbergvlakte.

The event, organised by Kraaifontein Family Market, aimed to promote community involvement and provide a platform for home vendors to promote their products.

One of the standout moments of the day was the spontaneous morning prayer that opened the event.

“The whole day went down without a hitch with the focus on a safe place for families to engage and enjoy the day,” said Jaco Smit from the Kraaifontein Family Market.

The market aims to take place once a month, the next one planned for 28 September at Monument Park High School.

By the end of the day several pets had found new homes pending home checks, and many more had sparked the interest of potential adopters. For the families who came looking for a new furry friend it was clear that the event had succeeded in making a positive impact.

“What an epic market! It was so well stocked and attended, and Graceland had our own little cordoned-off pitch. The puppies were a big hit and sparked much interest in the work we do.“It was a blessing to introduce our rescues to the world,” says Caron Burger, founder of Graceland Sanctuary.
