Fallen Angels halts animal intakes amid financial crisis

Fallen Angels Pet Rescue in Melkbosstrand has announced a six-month suspension of all new dog and cat intakes due to severe financial strain and full capacity at the facility.

Fallen Angels Pet Rescue in Melkbosstrand has announced that it will temporarily close its doors to all new dog and cat intakes for the next six months, citing severe financial strain and overwhelming capacity challenges.

The organisation says the decision was unavoidable as it struggles to continue caring for the animals already in its care.

Intake freeze announced for six months

In a public statement, the organisation confirmed that no additional animals will be taken in during this period.

“Turning away animals in need goes against everything we stand for, but we are simply not coping financially and can no longer take on additional dogs and cats without compromising the care of those already in our rescue,” said Fallen Angels Pet Rescue. “Every kennel is full and every rand is stretched.”

The organisation described the situation as critical, with all available space and resources fully stretched.

“Every kennel is full. Every rand is stretched. Every day is a struggle to provide food, veterinary care, and shelter for the animals already depending on us,” the rescue said.

Vet bills soar after sick litters

Fallen Angels Pet Rescue said recent rescues of severely ill litters have placed significant pressure on its finances, with veterinary costs now reaching approximately R120 000.

The organisation has urged the public to assist through donations to help continue the care of animals already under its protection.

The rescue has appealed for financial support, including contributions via its BackaBuddy campaign, as it works to sustain essential services for animals currently in its care.

Despite the intake suspension, the organisation said its commitment to existing animals remains unchanged and urgent assistance is still required.

Relocation

The announcement comes against the backdrop of ongoing challenges faced by the organisation in recent years.

In 2024, TygerBurger reported that Fallen Angels Pet Rescue was facing an uncertain future following a City of Cape Town zoning decision affecting its Melkbosstrand facility.

At the time, the organisation had invested years of work and significant funds into compliance processes, only to be informed that its Special Consent Use Permit application had been denied due to the property’s location within a regulated zone near the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.

Co-founder Gayl Basson previously described the situation as devastating, saying the organisation had “poured our hearts, our blood, sweat, and tears into making this a safe haven.”

City confirms application process

The City of Cape Town previously told TygerBurger that land use enforcement and land use application processes are separate, and that applications are assessed on their own merits.

Basson confirmed to TygerBurger on Monday the City overturned the ruling and grant them permission to stay on the farm, “but unfortunately, it came too late and relocation plans and new permit applications had already been paid so the move is still in the near future.”

“We are also holding a second-hand furniture charity auction this Friday in Hopefield to help with our vet bills.”
