An elderly woman from Welgelegen was the victim of a house robbery on Thursday 11 April last week.
The private security company District Watch was alerted to the robbery and had two officers sent to the scene of the crime in Kehrwieder Street.
“It was reported that an elderly lady had been robbed in her home of some jewellery and other items,” the company wrote on their social media page last week.
Upon their arrival, the officers could not find the suspect, and the crime scene was handed over to the Parow police.
Terry Swart, treasurer, and secretary of the Plattekloof, Welgelegen, Panorama and Kleinbosch (PWP) Neighbourhood Watch, confirmed the incident.
“According to our knowledge, this thief is known to the resident. She allowed access to her home, and he then proceeded to lock her in a room and steal her jewellery and other belongings.
“Fortunately, a neighbour heard her cries for help and contacted PWP Neighbourhood Watch for assistance to free her,” Swart said.
She said residents are urged to give with dignity and support local shelters. “Give with Dignity vouchers can also be purchased at the local Spars which entitles the homeless to a free meal and night of lodging. Cost of vouchers is R50 for four vouchers,” she said.
Deon Oosthuizen, vice-chair of the Monte Vista Plattekloof Glen Neighbourhood Watch, said they were also informed about the incident.
“From what I have heard the suspect is known to the victim. Which is why we always encourage residents to make copies of identification documents of anyone working on the property.
Safety and security
Oosthuizen said it is also important to ensure that one has a working security system.
“We have also found that residents fail to set their alarms or lock their security gates. So, it is important that they make sure the alarms are set and gates are locked. Most alarms have a stay function which arms the perimeter beams, doors, and windows but allows the occupants to still move around freely within the house.
“Security can be very expensive, but it is unfortunately a necessity and should be seen as an investment. Perimeter beams are expensive but works great, alternatively peach pips and gravel also serve as early warning, as it makes a noise whenever someone walks on it and is perhaps more cost effective than installing outside beams.
“Residents should look at joining the neighbourhood watch as well. Everyone should technically belong to the neighbourhood watch. This will assist residents to stay up to date with crime trends. The more you are aware of what is happening within the neighbourhood the better you can safeguard yourself.
“If anyone is concerned about their security system, they can always consult with their neighbourhood watch or security firm to assist in identifying weak spots and how to resolve it,” said Oosthuizen.
TygerBurger approached the Parow police for comment, but has not yet received a response.
