Education department to provide counselling after grade 8 learner is killed

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will provide counselling support to the Silversands High School community in Silversands after one of its learners was killed and another badly injured in a shooting in Wesbank on Saturday 17 October.

Died on the scene

Lincoln Jonathan (14), a grade 8 learner at Silversands High School, and a grade 11 learner (whom TygerBurger has not yet identified) were standing on the corner of Reindeer Street at about 20:10 when they were approached by gunmen who shot them. Lincoln died on the scene.

Millicent Merton, WCED spokesperson, says the department is aware of the incident. “The incident happened within the community and is not school-related. Our sincere condolences go to the families, friends, and the broader school community during this extremely difficult time. We wish the injured learner a speedy recovery. The district will provide counselling support to learners,” says Merton.

No arrests

Nobody has been arrested for the shooting. Sergeant Wesley Twigg of the Western Cape police urged the public to come forward with information that can identify the perpetrators and could lead to arrests.
