A man was killed when his vehicle crashed and caught fire on the N1 Highway near Bellville in the early hours of Thursday morning, 19 March.

The City’s Fire and Rescue Service received an emergency call at 00:15 on 19 March regarding a vehicle alight on the N1 outgoing carriageway near the Old Oak Road turn-off.

“Firefighters extinguished the blaze at 00:50; unfortunately the sole occupant, the driver, was dead,” said Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for Fire and Rescue.

The vehicle was a Nissan NP200 that left the roadway, struck a lamp pole and a boundary wall and caught fire.

Police investigation

Bellville police have opened a culpable homicide case and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

Sgt Wesley Twigg, Western Cape police spokesperson said, according to reports two vehicles collided with each other and one of the vehicles caught fire.

“The circumstances are under investigation and no arrests have yet been made.”

Medical personnel declared the driver dead on the scene. The driver was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

The police investigation is expected to determine the full circumstances of the collision.
