Most of the learners live with their grandmothers who cannot afford sanitary pads and that is the reason the Building Bigger Tables organisation in Bishop Lavis is doing a pad drive for Women’s Month.
Lucy Beukes, director of Building Bigger Tables, says their trauma councillors work with all the schools in the community and they found that many girls miss school because they do not have pads when that time of the month arrives.
“Children are being raised by grandparents due to the fact that the parents are on drugs and it really traumatises kids staying at home. Our organisation wants to help and make a change in the lives of these girls, so we are having a pad drive for the month of August. We are in need of assistance. We need all the help we can get, because this is a big issue,” says Beukes.
Beukes says they hope to get 2 500 packs that they can distribute to the 10 schools in the area.
“The pad drive will last untill 5 September and we are really urging the public to assist us. Imagine it is your daughter that cannot attend school because of something as natural as periods,” says Beukes.
