Several cases of house break-ins have been reported in areas such as Monte Vista, Welgelegen, Plattekloof and Edgemead, according to the private security group District Watch.
The group also issued some tips for home security on its social media page to help prevent residents from falling victim to this crime.
Some of the tips included installing an alarm system, fitting burglar bars, erecting a fence, installing exterior lighting and to befriend their neighbours.
Last week Gawie Venter, spokesperson, told TygerBurger they reported at least 10 such cases a month.
“We noticed shortly after South Africa went into the Covid-19 lockdown that crime started to increase. This was to be expected due to household’s financial constraints and people losing their employment. Unfortunately this trend did not slow down as we came out of lockdown.
“Crime has continued and is steadily increasing.
“Going back a few months on the statistics that we have, our teams have been sent out to about 10 house break-ins per month and 19 theft incidents throughout the suburbs we serve.
“These are only the incidents we were informed of to assist with and not what was either reported to the police or if a case number was given.
“Most house break-ins were through a closed window or doors where the suspects gained entry and stole items. Some of the theft reported was from parking garages, vehicles parked outdoors and from residence’s yards,” Venter says.
According to the latest crime statistics issued by the South African Police Service, there has been a decrease of burglaries at residential premises in the first quarter (April to June 2022) reported to the Parow Police Station which services areas such as Monte Vista, Welgelegen and Plattekloof.
This is 18 cases fewer than the previous year. This year a total of 102 cases were reported, compared to the previous year’s 120 cases.
Bothasig Police Station, which serves Edgemead, also showed a decrease of 10 cases.
A total of 35 cases were reported in April to June this year, compared to 45 cases the previous year.
