The Delft Primary Language Association recently hosted a competition where learners from different schools competed in debate, literature review and unprepared reading in English, Xhosa and Afrikaans, all three official languages in the Western Cape.
The executive committee of the Association consists of educators that teach in schools in Delft.
According to Thabo Mayosi, chair of the organisation, the competition was the first of its kind in Delft and was a huge success. “The competition began with the Grade 6 and 7 learners participating in an unprepared reading contest in Xhosa, Afrikaans and English. Following the reading competition the learners presented book reviews in the three official languages of the Western Cape. The day concluded with a debate competition featuring various primary schools from Delft in three official languages,” says Mayosi.
According to Mayosi the competition was in line with Literacy Month, National Book and International Literacy Day. “We also invited the community to be part of the event. The event was also attended by principals and educators of various schools,” says Mayosi.
He thanked everyone that formed part of the success of the event and wishes that it will be bigger and better in the future.
