The De Grendel Lions Club hosted a diabetes awareness project this past weekend where visitors to the Edgemead Village Centre were able to undergo a free blood sugar level test.
Diabetes, the club says, is one of the eight Lions Clubs International Pillars of Service.
“As the event was a collaboration with Gordons Bay Lions Club and Diabetes SA, the tests were conducted by a retired pharmacist from Gordons Bay Lions Club,” says Jacques Mostert, spokesperson.
Clients were informed about their test result, and where necessary, informed to visit their physician, he says.
Glenda Hon, Lion president elect, mentioned that she and the club members were pleasantly surprised by the positivity of the centre’s visitors, as at the end of the event a total of 90 people were tested.
“The club is also considering a similar event next year as many visitors indicated that they would like to undergo a test at a later stage,” says Mostert.
Hon also thanked Diabetes SA’s national manager, Margot McCumisky, for partnering with the De Grendel Lions Club. Visitors that were tested left armed with information and information packs provided by Diabetes SA, with the aim of raising their awareness regarding diabetes.
McCumisky was very complementary regarding the project, mentioning that the health of our community is very important and that partnerships highlighting diabetes help to inform the broader community regarding diabetes, says Mostert. McCumisky also suggested that people visit Diabetes SA’s website for more information.
The project was held on Saturday 29 November.
