A cyclist died, presumably of a heart attack, while cycling on Vissershok Road near Durbanville on Sunday morning.

Passing motorists saw the man lying on the side of the road near his bicycle, about 06:30, and raised the alarm. A motorist turned around and found the cyclist unresponsive.

More cyclists stopped and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but could not revive him, a spokesperson for Bassett Alarms, one of the first on the scene around 09:20, said.

He said the City’s metro ambulance service arrived about half an hour later, shortly before family members of the dead man, estimated to be in his 60s.

Heart attack

“Sadly, despite all efforts the cyclist was declared dead on the scene [presumably] after suffering a heart attack,” according to a post on Bassett Alarms’ Facebook page.

“Our deepest condolences go to the cyclist’s wife, family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. Words aren’t enough at such moments.”

The incident occurred just past Hooggelegen Road, before Westerdale Road, outside an instant-lawn farm.
