A cycling club in Ravensmead is inviting new members to join the club.
The Belhar Self-help Cycling Club is inviting everyone, but especially young girls, to join them.
“We are a local developmental cycling club and although many of our members are male we are appealing to young girls to look at joining our club. This appeal forms part of our club’s women empowerment campaign in support of women’s month,” says Faldila Adams of the club.
According to Faldila the sport of cycling is generally seen as a, “rich man’s sport” on account of the relative expensive and high-tech equipment needed to enter the sport.
“It is true that carbon fiber and very light weight metal framed bicycles and other equipment can become out of reach for many prospective participants but despite these setbacks we use what we have available and with our best training methods we get our riders motivated and physically fit with an extensive road training regime,” says Adams.
The Belhar Self-Help Cycling Club was started by Moegamad Naiam Adams in 2005.
He loved the sport and was determined to give the community a chance to enter this exciting sport.
The club has produced some upcoming stars like, former member Mujahid Ajouhaar who recently attended the Oudtshoorn Youth Championship but he also excelled in the Cape Town Cycle Tour, where he was placed 1st in his group of 266 junior riders in 2020.
“We believe that there are many potential champions in our communities and we are appealing to especially young girls who are interested in entering this sport to contact us as there are very few of them. Unfortunately, unlike many other teams from wealthier areas, we are not well funded. However, we train our riders hard to improve their techniques and stamina for future races,” says Adams
