The Bothasig Community Policing Forum (CPF) has warned recently that learners in the area are being “targeted” for their mobile devices, especially during the early morning drop-off. The CPF issued a warning on Thursday 11 September, encouraging learners to stay alert and safe.

Mario Borchards, CPF chair, stated that he wants to bring the safety concern to the attention of the community, after being approached for comment.

“Learners within the Bothasig precinct are increasingly being targeted for their devices – such as cellphones and laptops – particularly during early-morning school drop-offs.

“In the last couple of months, there have been incidents where learners were robbed in front of schools during these early-morning hours. This is a deeply concerning trend that places our young people at risk.

“We appeal to parents, guardians, and learners to remain vigilant during drop-off times. Staying alert and taking precautionary measures can help reduce the risk of becoming a target,” Borchards says.

The CPF shared a few safety tips with the learners:

. Keep your cellphone and laptop out of sight when walking to school;

. Do not use earphones while walking – stay aware of your surroundings;

. Walk in groups where possible, and not alone;

. Report any suspicious persons or vehicles immediately and

. Never accept lifts or offers from strangers.

Safety tips for their parents were also shared:

. Drop learners as close to the school gate as possible;

. Avoid giving learners expensive devices if not needed at school;

. Encourage children to call or text once safely inside the school and

. Report suspicious activity to the school, law enforcement, or police immediately. Call the Bothasig Police Station on 021 559 9400 or the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement on 021 480 7700.
