The Military Skills Development programme offers a comprehensive two-year contract that combines professional development with practical military experience. During the first year recruits undergo initial military training followed by specialised functional training within their respective services.

In the second year members are deployed to various units based on their specific mustering requirements, where they have the opportunity to apply their knowledge, develop leadership qualities and enhance practical skills in a professional environment.

Educational requirements and documentation

Candidates must hold a matric certificate, with mathematics and physical science required for specialised musterings such as aviation engineering. Those with post-matric qualifications including N6 certificates, three-year diplomas or degrees are also encouraged to apply.

All applicants must submit a comprehensive application including their CV and certified copies of their ID, matric certificate (statement of results acceptable for 2025 graduates) and any tertiary qualifications.

Application process

Completed application forms can be hand-delivered to the nearest recruitment centre or posted to: Department of Defence, Human Resource Division Chief Directorate HR Management (Directorate HR Acquisition), Private Bag X976, Pretoria 0001.

Selection timeline

The SANDF has advised that applicants who have not been contacted by 31 December 2027 should consider their applications unsuccessful. The programme represents a significant opportunity for young South Africans to develop professional skills while serving their country. Additional requirements include having no visible tattoos when in uniform, which will be verified through body inspection during the selection process.
