The community of Bonteheuwel welcomed the arrests of four people for the brutal vigilante murder of an alleged housebreaker a month ago.
Horrified
The brutal murder of Tyrese Parsons shocked and horrified the entire community, after he was tortured for hours, viciously assaulted, and ultimately murdered in circumstances that can only be described as barbaric.
Local councillor Angus McKenzie says the community welcomes the arrests. “Just over a month ago, Tyrese was subjected to an unspeakable act of cruelty. The details of what he endured are deeply disturbing and serve as a stark reminder of the evil that can exist when individuals take the law into their own hands.
“When this tragedy unfolded, I made a commitment to Tyrese’s family and to the broader Bonteheuwel community that this case would not be forgotten. While no action could ever undo the pain suffered by his loved ones, my office immediately stepped in to assist the family and ensure that Tyrese received a dignified burial. However, we all knew that a proper farewell alone would never bring the closure that his family deserved. Justice had to be pursued,” says McKenzie.
Working together
McKenzie says the broader community worked together to apprehend the suspects. “Over the past several weeks, we worked tirelessly alongside law enforcement, community leaders, residents, and witnesses. We encouraged those with information to come forward, assured them of support, and appealed to the conscience of our community to assist in bringing those responsible to book.
“I can confirm that four individuals have been arrested in connection with the brutal vigilante-style killing that took place in Boxwood Street, Bonteheuwel. This development sends a clear message: the long arm of the law does work. It works even more effectively when communities refuse to remain silent and choose to stand on the side of justice. The arrests made in this case would not have been possible without the courage of witnesses and residents who came forward with critical information,” says McKenzie.
Work does not end
The four accused now face serious charges, including murder. “As a councillor and representative of this community, I will closely monitor these proceedings and will strongly support efforts to oppose any application for bail. Given the brutality of this crime, the interests of justice and the safety of the community must remain paramount.
“Our work does not end with these arrests. We will continue to engage with investigators, support the Parsons family, and ensure that this matter is followed through to its final conclusion. We owe it to Tyrese, his family, and every law-abiding resident to see that justice is served.
“No person has the right to act as judge, jury, and executioner. Vigilantism has no place in a constitutional democracy. Those who believe they can commit such horrific acts with impunity must know that they will be hunted down, arrested, prosecuted, and held accountable,” says McKenzie.
TygerBurger reached out to the police for comment on the arrests but has not received any feedback.
